A romantic scuba-diving couple are taking the plunge again.<\/p>\n
Jamie Heptonstall popped the question to his wife, Sophie, using sign language 60 feet underwater.<\/p>\n
Now the couple from Lymm, in Cheshire, have come up with the perfect way of celebrating their first anniversary.<\/p>\n
They will be spending the day submerged in the vast waters of Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands.<\/p>\n
This rapture of the deep is their idea of heaven with the chance to dive among the huge number of wrecks that litter one of the world\u2019s finest but most remote natural harbours.<\/p>\n
The couple met through their mutual love of diving and their membership of the British Sub Aqua Club (BSAC).<\/p>\n
Jamie, 34, said: \u201cWe\u2019ve been friends for quite a long time and after we both became single our relationship blossomed.<\/p>\n
\u201cI actually proposed under water, in Capenwray Quarry, near Lancaster. I didn\u2019t have a ring because it was a spur of the moment thing.<\/p>\n
Both Jamie, who works for construction company Bomer and Kirkland and Sophie, 31, a marketing manager, are qualified diving instructors and he admits that their love of diving borders on an obsession. Sophie is also a volunteer Board member of BSAC which is based at Ellesmere Port<\/p>\n
Jamie said: \u201cOur garage is literally crammed with diving equipment \u2013 we\u2019ve had to decide whether two people really need 27 air cylinders.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe both prepared for our national diving instructor exam together and that was part of our wedding planning.<\/p>\n
\u201cApart from that our wedding was conventional and took place on dry land at the Belle Epoque brasserie in Knutsford although my best man was actually a girl.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut there is definitely something about diving that seems to lead to romance because the number of people we know who have got together through the sport is amazing.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt does bring people together. You have to get up at six in the morning and push a boat out so we are very motivated and focused people and we\u2019re all driven by this same passion for their sport.<\/p>\n
\u201cDiving isn\u2019t hugely competitive and people are generally comfortable with what they do and are quite relaxed and comfortable with it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Jamie and Sophie have been active in charity work through their diving and instead of wedding presents they asked for donations to the RNLI and Cancer Research and raised over \u00a34,000.<\/p>\n
Scapa Flow really is wreck central. This was where the captured First World War German High Seas Fleet was deliberately sunk by its own crews and many of the ships still lie down in the depths of Scapa Flow.<\/p>\n
Jamie and Sophie will be able to indulge their passion for wreck diving among these wartime giants which include the dreadnought Markgraf, 575 feet long and over 25,000 tons, and its sister ships Konig and Kronprinz Wilhelm, once the pride of the German navy.<\/p>\n
Mary Tetley, the Chief Executive of BSAC, said: “I think that their dive at Scapa Flow is the perfect way for Jamie and Sophie to celebrate their first anniversay.<\/p>\n
“Diving must be one of the most romantic pastimes going. We have many members who have met their partners while diving. You might say, it’s the ideal way of taking the plunge.”<\/p>\n
