The headmaster of one of the UK\u2019s newest private schools has paid tribute to the \u201cfantastic\u201d efforts of his sixth form students after 91 per cent of them gained A stars and As at A-level.<\/p>\n
Andrew Allman, Headmaster of Myddelton College in Denbigh, said his Sixth Form and Year 11 students, had shown great character and determination in dealing with the difficulties of learning under pandemic restrictions.<\/p>\n
He said: \u201cWe were able to continue through lockdown to provide a full classroom teaching programme for all pupils but for the first year of their courses this was mainly remotely because of lockdown.<\/p>\n
\u201cThrough it all they and the teaching staff here showed great character, determination and resilience in very difficult circumstances and now they have gained their reward.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe had 100% A Star to A in Art, Chinese, Computer Science, Drama and Theatre, Mathematics and Further Mathematics, Government and Politics, History, Music, Psychology and BTEC Film and Media.\u201d<\/p>\n
At A-level 22 students sat the exams and 70 per cent of the grades achieved were A Star to A with three A Stars in English Literature, History and Politics going to Head of School Katie Balmer, from Rhewl, near Ruthin.<\/p>\n
Katie, who will be going to Bath to study Politics in September, said: \u201cI\u2019ve got the results I need but it was difficult preparing for exams and then finding there weren\u2019t going to be exams.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe had online lessons for a year and then were back in class but the staff have been brilliant and really helped us through it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Proud mum Amanda said: \u201cWe\u2019re just super proud of Katie. She has worked really hard and it\u2019s all paid off now.\u201d<\/p>\n
Megan Bishop, from Llanrhaeadr, gained three A Stars in Computer Science, Maths and Physics and will go to York University to study Computer Science and she said: \u201cIt was a difficult year . I work better at school than at home and not knowing until the last minute whether we\u2019d be sitting exams or not was\u2019t ideal but I couldn\u2019t have done any better.\u201d<\/p>\n
Maddy Rees, from Hawarden, is headed for Cardiff University to study Media after an A Star in Criminology, an A in Psychology and a Distinction in Media.<\/p>\n
She said: \u201cIt\u2019s been very tough but worthwhile in the end but the school has been great using technology to help us and I\u2019ve just carried on through it all.\u201d<\/p>\n
The dream of a career in the West End is alive for Libby Williams, from St Asaph, after As in Politics and Drama and a Distinction in Media Studies sends her to Edge Hill University, in Liverpool, to study Musical Theatre.<\/p>\n
She said: \u201cI want to perform, that\u2019s my dream, to be on stage in the West End.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s the fear of the unknown before you open that envelope but then there\u2019s the relief when you see you\u2019ve done well.\u201d<\/p>\n
Abbey Hughes, from St Asaph, is realising a childhood dream to study Midwifery at Swansea University and she said: \u201cIt\u2019s my dream place and dream subject. I\u2019ve wanted to be a midwife since I was six.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s been a long time coming for me but it makes all the hard work worthwhile now. To see that I\u2019m going in four weeks. I couldn\u2019t be any more excited because I can\u2019t imagine doing anything else.\u201d<\/p>\n
Her mum, Karen, said: \u201cI\u2019ve got five children and Abbey was number two and she\u2019s been involved with my babies since she was six.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe just has that kind of personality. She is a very caring person. You have to be a special breed of person to be a midwife, it\u2019s a vocation.\u201d<\/p>\n
Gabriel Mealor Pritchard, from Conwy, whose dream is to work for Vogue magazine is to study Fashion Journalism at Central St Martin\u2019s University in London after an A Star Distinction and two Bs and he said: \u201cI can\u2019t believe it. It\u2019s the best place in the world to do my subject.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe last two years have been s insane but it didn\u2019t hit me until this morning that I might not pass but then I opened the envelope and realized everything weas going to be fine.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe school has been amazing. Being able to do all our lessons at home meant we didn\u2019t miss out on anything.\u201d<\/p>\n
His mum, Nikki Pritchard, assistant headmistress at Myddelton College, said: \u201cI\u2019m really proud. His education just didn\u2019t stop and that\u2019s helped him a lot.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s worked very hard but the support from the teachers has been excellent.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ffion Williams-Jones, from Nantglyn, Denbigh, is also headed for London, to the University of the Arts, to study Fashion Design and Development after two A Stars and an A.<\/p>\n
She said: \u201cI\u2019m absolutely over the moon. It\u2019s been a really tough two years.<\/p>\n
\u201cI came prepared for the worst because of how hard it has been but that just makes getting these brilliant results even better.\u201d<\/p>\n
Others to do well include Ella Evans, AAB, who will go to Warwick to study Medical Science and Sam McAllister, three As, is taking a gap year before studying Medicine.<\/p>\n
Myddelton College\u2019s overseas students have also done well, especially as they had to cope with time differences in attending on-line lessons, and Schweifen Liu, from Jiangsu Province, in China, will go to Edinburgh University to read Maths after A Stars in Further Maths and Maths and an A in Business Studies.<\/p>\n
He hasn\u2019t been home in over a year and isn\u2019t likely to do so before Christmas but he is thrilled to be heading north next month and said: \u201cEdinburgh is supposed to be a fabulous place, the Athens of the North.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m going to get in touch with my parents straight away or they\u2019ll keep messaging me.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s been sad because our cat has just died but the results have helped cheer me up.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ilona Deleudik, from Russia, will study Business Management and Marketing at London City University after gaining an A Star and two Bs.<\/p>\n
Mr Allman added: \u201cThe most important thing for us is that our students achieve their full potential but we also believe that we shouldn\u2019t just be an exam factory but should give our pupils the opportunity to pursue other activities, especially outdoors.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe believe those experiences provide them with a well-rounded education to prepare them for university and enables them to get the most out of their further education.\u201d<\/p>\n
